In 2016, I founded Code/Art because I learned we were going in the wrong direction in computer science (CS) in terms of female representation. I learned that the percentage of women majoring in CS is half today what it was when I was in college, even while the number of CS-related jobs has skyrocketed (with nearly 1 million going unfilled in the US today)!

A major reason for this is that girls aren't getting an early introduction to coding, and if they don't try it before high school, they are unlikely to ever take a computer science class.

At Code/Art, we've found a way to give girls that early introduction without them having to make the decision to sign up for a class. Instead, we take coding to them - through ART! By training middle school and elementary school art teachers to use computer programming as a tool to create art, all K-8 girls (and boys) get that early introduction to coding in a fun and creative way…and many realize they like it! And when that happens, Code/Art has more programs - including all-girl coding clubs and competitions - to keep young women on the path to success in a future tech career.
